Carlos Through the Tall Grass

Over the summer of 2019, I worked as a still photographer and production assistant on an independent film production called Carlos Through The Tall Grass, which was directed by Rick Dominguez and produced by Patti McCarthy and Jennifer Holmes. My primary job was to take behind-the-scenes still photographs to help publicize and promote the film on social media and other online platforms. I was supposed to capture anything and everything that happened on and off set, which gave me a chance to improve upon my photography skills and learn from industry professionals. As a production assistant, I helped the art department with set decoration and props, which included everything from creating mock newspaper articles and posters to buying supplies in the dead of night. I watched and guarded expensive camera and lighting equipment, besides helping with craft services, hauling equipment and packing a van full of film supplies.

I also acted as a public relations person for the film. I contacted members of the press to generate publicity, filmed audition tapes and conducted on-set interviews with the director, producers, cast members and different departments of the production team for a behind-the-scenes documentary. I filmed on-set tours and captured B-roll of everyone setting up and taking down the sets.

I was involved with every step of the production. In pre-production, I filmed and edited audition tapes for the producers and director to review. This would help them when casting the roles for the film. In production, I acted as still photographer and production assistant. In post-production, I worked virtually with a team of graphic designers on making the film’s poster, press kit and editing together the behind the scenes documentary, which would eventually be used for crowd funding.
